This course is designed to provide a systematic introduction to listening-comprehension and note-taking skills. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: LO1. *Evaluate listening comprehension and note-taking skills. LO2. *Compare the key differences between the language of lecturing and the language of writing; *notice the lecture structure and cues; *understand the role of paraphrase, repetition, exemplification and digression; *use context and prediction to get main ideas; *predict content and lecture direction. LO3. *Understand lecture focus and direction from introductions; *use conclusions to check the lecture’s main points; *understand and avoid digressions. LO4. *Recognize and use key words; *make use of abbreviations; *use note-taking symbols and abbreviations effectively; *visually represent relationships and the relative importance of information. LO5. *Take notes on numbers and statistics effectively. LO6. *Understand the importance of recognizing lecture organization; *recognize organizational plans within lectures; *define terms through simple and extended definitions; *list subtopics; *exemplify a topic. LO7. *Describe characteristics of a lecture; *describe a process or sequence of events; *classify subtopics. LO8. *Describe a causal relationship; *compare and contrast information; *recognize generalizations and their support. Assessment structure: 1) On-going assessment - Progress Tests 03*15%=45% - Assignment 15% 2) Final Examination (FE) 40% 3) Final Result 100% 4) Completion Criteria: On-going assessment >0, Final Exam Score >=4/10 & Final Result >=5/10 - If FE < 4/10, student must resit exam;
