A- Listening: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to - Listen to talk shows or radio shows to identify main ideas (U1) - Listen for rhetorical questions via an invention description (U2) - Listen to radio news programs or reports to look for bias (U2), reasons and explanations (U3), summaries (U3) , or listen to understand a sequence of events (U4) - Listen to lectures for similarities and differences (U5), for supporting statements (U5), or listen to know phrases used to introduce examples (U1) - Listen to a presentation for organization cues to distinguish facts and opinions (U4) B- Speaking: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to - Use appropriate language to let other people know that they are paying attention and that they are interested in what people are saying during a conversation or informal discussion (U1) - Give examples to express ideas clearly and convincingly (U2) - Give reasons to contribute to an academic discussion (U3) - Change and return to topics in a conversation (U4) - Interrupt politely during a lecture or a classroom discussion to understand it clearly (U5) - Pronounce correctly thought groups (know how to pause correctly) (U1) and weak forms of ‘that’ and ‘as’ (U2) - Use appropriate language express disagreement politely (U3) - Know and use intonation patterns in questions and to express feelings and attitudes (U4) - Stress correctly to express the right meanings and to emphasize important information (U5) - Introduce themselves (U1) - Discuss the result of an experiment, research findings and applications, and water issues (U3) - Present the pros and cons of an invention; about a city, a plan for a public space, future problems and personal and community values. (U2, U5) - debate an argument.

- Attend more than 80% of in-class hours in order to be accepted to the final examination - Actively participate in class activities - Fulfil tasks given by intructor after class - Use their own laptops in class only for learning purposes - Use CD-ROM provided with the textbook - Access the course website (http://cms.fpt.edu.vn) for up-to-date information and material of the course, for online supports from teachers and other students and for practicing and assessment.
