- Course objective: The aim of the course is to enable students to critically evaluate how context impacts the interpretation of meaning in communication. Additionally, students will be equipped to apply their understanding of pragmatics in order to produce precise and contextually appropriate content in English for various communicative purposes. - Course description: This course focuses on how context influences the interpretation of meaning in communication. The course provides understanding on contextual meaning so that students will be able to analyze how context, including cultural background and situational factors, shapes the meaning of utterances. 1. Emphasize the practical skills that students will learn in this course. 2. Observe coherence and consistency in using active voice statements. 3. The course includes an exploration of speech act concepts, illustrating how utterances can serve as requests, commands, questions, or statements based on the context in which they are used. Concepts of speech acts, including how utterances can function as requests, commands, questions, or statements, depending on context are provided with . Mastery of pragmatics equips students with the ability to navigate complex social and professional situations, fostering better negotiation, collaboration, and overall communication competence, which are invaluable assets in careers such as business, education, law, media, and international relations. - Teaching and Learning Methodology: This course applies instructional, communicative, and interactive discussions. Instructions on pre-lesson and post lesson exercises are designed to apply learnt skills. Open minded approach to questions and any misunderstandings that may arise during lessons is preferred. Group work and pair work are encouraged to foster interaction and discussion. Group presentations are carried out to reflect students' comprehension on pragmatic aspects in the course. Linguistic data analysis may particularly be included as the students are required to do the Assignment across specific languages.

- Students must attend at least 80% of contact slots in order to be accepted to the final examination. - Students are responsible to do all exercises, assignments, and activities given by instructors in class or at home and submit on time. - Use laptops in class only for learning purposes - Be punctual for class. - Actively participate in class discussions. - Preview and review the lessons. - Check vocabulary for comprehension. - Work with a group for group discussions and activities.
