Objectives: This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of Sociolinguistics and the relationship between language and society, and how language is used in multilingual speech communities. Description: The course helps students: ~Understand sociolinguistic terminology or concepts to apply in research and real-life practices. ~Use language appropriately in different social contexts. ~Interpret the social relationships in a community, and the way people convey and construct aspects of their social identity through language. ~Examine some similarities and differences in the way people use their language to convey meaning in association with society. Teaching method: This course applies instructional, communicative, and interactive discussions with: ~instructions on lessons and exercises meant to apply learnt skills. ~researching features of sociolinguistics through presentations and project work. ~open-minded approach to questions and issues that may arise during lessons. ~lectures and seminars to enhance interest in the field of sociolinguistics.
