Course description: This course offers an introduction to the practical analysis of English sentence structure and is designed for English learners who are into the field of linguistics.The course provides key concepts in English sentence structure such as constituency, category and functions, employing tree diagrams and practices of drawing tree diagrams which help learners make sense of the knowledge provided. The exercises are relevant, not only for reviewing syntactic aspects and discussions of in-text exercises but also for constructing interrelationships between syntactic knowledge in different languages and ones of related areas in linguistics. References for further reading are given at the end of each chapter to offer learners choices for extensive reading about related subjects. Course objective: The course aims to provide students knowledge of syntax for applying to their studying linguistics and for generating accurate content in English for different communication purposes. Teaching and Learning Methodology: This course applies instructional, communicative, and interactive discussions. It is appropriate for different teaching and learning tendencies involving instructors' instructions on pre-lesson and post lesson exercises meant to apply learnt skills; ancillary lectures and seminars to enhance active interest in the topics; or interactive discussions leading by students followed by instructors' feedback and conclusions. Open-mindedness and questions from both students and instructors are encouraged if misunderstandings related to the subject knowledge arise.
