The course which is a continuation of OFC311, first covers the design methods of digital links and analog links over optical fiber. Second it addresses the principles of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), examines the functions of a genetic WDM links and discusses international standards for different WDM schemes. Subsequently, the course describes different concepts for creating optical amplification and show how the elements are put together to form links and networks. Then, optical networking concepts for long-haul, metro, local area, and access networks are presented. Finally, the performance measurement and mornitoring for optical fiber links which are very important to manage error, fault and maintenance are introduced. Topics are covered: Digital Links; Analog Link; WDM Concepts and Components; Optical Amplifiers; Nonlinear Effects; Optical Networks; Performance Measurement and Monitoring.
