University Success Oral Communication is designed for English language learners preparing for mainstream academic environments. A flexible three-part approach includes intensive and systematic skill development tied to learning outcomes along with authentic lectures delivered by top professors from Stanford University. The Oral Communication strand provides real-life learning experiences for students who need to achieve academic autonomy. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: LO1. Listening actively to follow a lecture or discussion, taking organized notes and identifing subject relative clause LO2. Demonstrating an understanding of ideas in a discussion,answering questions about texts, and using tag questions to invite agreement LO3. Formulating probing questions, describing conclusions, summerizing listening, and connecting ideas with so and therefore LO4. Comparing similar ideas and contrasting different ideas, understanding relationships between ideas, and utilizing the simple past passive LO5. Identifying parts of a presentation or lecture, planning for a presentation, making predictions, explaning order with linking words LO6. Identifying and expressing facts, and opinions, bias, expressing conditions with if LO7. Making inferences, giving oral summaries to relate ideas, answering inference quetions, and expressing present possibility with modal verbs LO8. Taking note on research lectures, relating source information to an audience, synthesizing information from multiple sources, and using compliment clauses after about LO9.
