This course is designed to provide students with a understanding of the foundations and the dimensions of Vietnamese culture, origin, characteristic; pay particular attention to the relationship between Vietnamese culture and the present-day life of the Vietnamese people and to the different elements of the culture which are under the social structures, belief systems, literature, arts, customs, etc... Topics mainly include: (1) the foundations of Vietnamese civilization: its geography, language, and history; (2) the core concepts in Vietnamese thoughts and religions: Aninism, Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Catholicism, the new sects religion;...(3) Literature (4) Society and Life, including education, the role of women, Vietnamese food, festivals and leisure activities ; (5) Arts and Architecture (6) Vietnamese performing arts like Ca trù, Tuồng, Hát Bội... -Teaching method: Presentation, Discussion, teamwork, critical thinking, field-trip.
